Creativity starts with close observation

Fresh ideas do not only appear on a blank page. They often begin in familiar details.

Creativity is often described as a sudden flash. In daily life it frequently begins with collected observations: a colour combination, a conversation or an unusual solution to a small problem. Looking closely provides material to work with later. No special talent is required to begin noticing.

Collect before judging

Record things that catch your attention. A photograph, quick sketch or two sentences are enough. Do not immediately decide whether the observation will become useful. This stage is about variety and accuracy. A small personal collection may later help more than another search for generic inspiration images.

Change one observation

Choose a detail and alter one property. What happens if a pattern grows larger, a story is told from another perspective or a sequence is reversed? Small experiments make ideas visible. Not every version will lead somewhere, but rejected attempts can reveal what was interesting in the original thought.

Try this

  • Notice one detail on each of three days.
  • Choose a discovery and change one property.
  • Keep experiments before making a final judgement.

A thought to take away

Creative work needs selection as well as openness. After collecting, take another look. Which observation contains a question you want to follow? That is where a small discovery can begin to become a project of your own.
